Affiliate Marketing and Affiliate Network Guide

'Affiliate Marketing' are a huge source of income on the web and a good way of supplimenting your sites income. (You don't even need a website - see our pages on White Label Affiliate programs and Pay Per Click methods.

Getting advertisers for your site is easy, see the list of affiliate networks (right).

Firstly sign up to all the affiliate networks, there will be some cross over in advertisers, ie several affiliate networks may have the same advertiser with different commission rates and cookie rates. You don't have to use an advertiser if you dont want to - you pick and choose who you advertise.

When starting your affiliate marketing venture please consider that you get paid for:

Sale - you usually get a %age of the sale when someone buys an item after following a link from your affiliate marketing site.

Lead - being where you refer someone who signs up to a service any you get a one off payment.

Pay per click where you get a payment for every visitor you refer.

Choosing advertiser / Affiliate network you need to look at the following factors:

• Commission Rate, make sure you get the best rate, compare across networks.
• Cookie length. After clicking through one of your links from your affiliate marketing site a cookie will be placed on the users computer, if a purchase is made within the time frame specified by the cookie (and if the cookie is not overwritten by another cookie from another affiliate marketing website) commission will be paid. Therefore the longer the cookie period the better.
• Relevance of product. There is no point trying to sell steak on an affiliate marketing site targeted at vegetarians even if the steak is the finest.
• Cost of product. Is the product price too high, people won’t pay over the odds for things even if you would get more commission, there is no point trying to earn 10% on £200 when you can offer the same product at 5% commission for £150.

At the end of the day it is a case of advertise what you think will be relevant to visitors to your site.

In text adverts ie where the link to a product is contained in an editorial are most effective. This method of advertising is a lot more effective than throwing in a banner at the top of each page. Most of the networks let you apply tracking codes to each of your adverts so that you can see which type of advert works best for your site, use it.

One more thing. Don’t be a link farm. Affiliate marketing is more than just planting links on a page. Have original content on your site relevant to the subject matter, remember to give people a reason to visit and return to your site.
