There are few major search engines and one very important directory that provides the vast majority of all visitors to any website. This is the first big source of free traffic so make the most of it.

DMOZ:

From dmoz.org: "The Open Directory Project is the largest, most comprehensive human-edited directory of the Web. It is constructed and maintained by a vast, global community of volunteer editors."

Essentially the DMOZ directory is available for anyone to download and use to add to their own site, for this reason if you get a link in DMOZ your link will start appearing all over the web in time as people use DMOZ’s directory to start/supplement their own.

Before we submit your sites it is essential they have a site to see and list, we must have our content and file structure place along with META TAGS and TITLE tags on all pages:

Meta Tags

Meta tags list keywords and phrases that help search engines categories your site.
Include meta tags that are relevant to your content. The meta tags live in the HEAD portion of the page, they look like:

<meta name="keywords" content=" put your keywords separated by commas here ">
<meta name="description" content="
put a description of your web site here ">

Also important is to have a TITLE tag within the HEAD tags. Every page must have a title:

<title>
YOUR TITLE HERE</title>.

Repetition between these tags and the content is essential, if you can make the <title> the same as the <h1> tag contents on the page.

Placement of Text

Make sure text containing keywords is close to the top of the page as possible. Thais can easily be achieved by putting a summary paragraph at the top of your article, this will help in two ways, it will aid the user as they can quickly see if the page is what they want and also search engines may not read the whole page. For this reason it is also important to place your navigation system at the top or left hand column of the page so that the search engine manages to see these before moving on to another page.

Google.com

Google.com is the mother of all search engines, but submission is optional as google trawls the entire web. For this reason it is very important to get links from other sites, as the Google bot (little program that google uses to find web pages) will find it easier to locate your page and therefore your page will be ranked higher. The key to google is A LOT of links to one or more of your pages both internally from your site and externally from other sites. Limit the number of links from your page to others as this will decrease your page ranking. If your site is an affiliate site and you require to link out to make your money only use a few quality links, as your site grows and you get more external sites linking to you. You can increase the number of links, but keep that ratio of ‘links in’ to ‘links out’ as high as possible.

You can list your site with http://www.google.co.uk/addurl.html, but even if you don’t google will probably find your site if it is linked to from other sites already listed. Just submit your main page and google and google should find all the other pages on your site in its own time. There is no point in listing more than one page from each site, If your site has not been listed in over a month it might be worth re submitting.

To get links to your site find similar sites and ask nicely, search in google with keywords you think best suit your site and look at the results, email the top sites in that search (after checking out the site). Links from free for all link sites may actually hinder your search engine rankings. DONOT spam as many sites as you can as these emails will be ignored and you will damage any chance you ever had for getting a link.

Once your site has been up for a while you can check who is linking to your site by doing a search on google, in the search bar type "link:" followed by your web site URL ie "link:www.siteurl.com", this will return pages that link to your site. In a similar way you can check what pages of your site are listed by doing a "site:" search i.e. "site:www.siteurl.com +search term". This will return all pages that contain the search term(s) added, if you wish to list all pages replace +search term with –111111111111111111111, where 111111111111111111111 is very unlikely to appear on your site.

The next step to getting traffic to your site is to register with http://dmoz.org/ find an appropriate category, look at other entries in that category and submit your site using a page description in the same style.

It may take several months to get your site listed as all entries are edited by a human.

Google Rankings

Google uses a system of page rankings to measure the importance of your site. This is a score out of 10 the higher value the better. Sites rarely get a value of 10, this is usually huge sites like google.com an yahoo.com.

To find a ranking of a website you will have to download the google toolbar from www.google.com.

The factors that increase this value are

  • Links from relevant sites

Against are.

  • Links from irrelevant sites

Unfortunately the workings of googles ranking system aren’t in the public domain. But here is a summary of popular belief:

Page rank is basically a count of in bound links. Ie number of sites that link to your site.

It is better to have links from sites with a high PR, it is commonly thought that if you get a link for a high PR site PR7 or above you will receive a PR6 next time google refreshes its databases (often referred to a google dance).

Getting a few links from high PR sites is more important than a load from low PR sites. (Don't discount low PR sites especially if they are very relevant)

It appears that the PR scale is exponential, ie having one PR4 site is many times more important than having 2 PR2 sites link to you

Not only is the PR of the linking site important, but also the relevance of their content. Therefore it might be worth getting a link from one of your competitors, because of this system that may be more than willing to swap links with you.

Linking out to loads of sites who’s content is not relevant or similar to yours lower your PR. Google does not only look at onpage factors (body text, meta description) etc but also the theme of the sites that you link to. The less focused the site appears to google the lower the Page Ranking.
In summary try and get links for high PR sites (but don’t discount others completely), but make sure the sites you link to and those that link to you have a relevance to your site.

The system is being continually modified and these techniques may be out of date - but I still believe they are a good guide.

Submission

Submit your web site to all search engines.
If you want to be seen by a lot of surfers try a premium service like Google Adwords where you pay a few pence per click onto your site.

Pay Per Click Search Engines

This is where you have to part with some of your hard-earned cash.

Pay Per Click (PPC) search engine do work. I used a google advert (adwords) to point people towards a page on a site of mine selling DVD recorders, I made a profit equal to as much as I spent. BUT with this method you need to do a few things:

  • Plan
  • Choose 5-6 of your products/services you wish to promote in this manner.
  • Make a list of 20-30 relevant keywords/phrases for each product/service
  • Make sure the adverts perform
  • If you don’t get a high enough click through rate you might be charged a reactivation fee!
  • Make sure that the advert displayed is relevant to the keywords
  • Be ruthless
  • Think about how much profit you make on each item and set limits, you don’t want to sell items and make a loss, if you get £2 profit on an item and you are paying 10p per click make sure that you get one sale every 10 or so clicks
  • If an ad is performing badly weed it out.
  • If an keyword/phrase is performing badly weed it out.

Honing your adverts in this way may cost a little money to start with but if you want a long campaign you need to do this to make sure that you will get the performance required.

Tip: Keep an eye out on the web, sometimes you can find a free adwords voucher, it is worth a surf every couple of months
