Collecting Payment Online

If you are unsure how to collect online payments without paying the earth try PayPal. This is ideal for small merchants as it allows you to collect payments with small fees based on each transaction, no set-up fees or ongoing subscriptions. With PayPal you can collect payments in most currencies and it is free to join. PayPal is the best way to collect payments with eBay as PayPal and Ebay are owned by the same company!

Once registered with PayPal and you have registered your current account details you can easily use their links to produce buy buttons, you can also use their shopping cart and collect credit card payments. (Charge 20p+3.4% of transaction value – business account, free with personal account. You can only collect debit card payments with a personal account).

The other payment collection services of note in the UK is nochex.com – worth a look but not as versatile as PayPal

If you already have a product to sell consider cross selling with complimentary products. There are many affiliate programs about, the best are listed on our resources at the end of this document, these programs provide a banners and text links for products from top brands/stores and you get paid commission on any sales made, typically commission is between 5% and 15%. What you must NOT do is to use an affiliate that sells the same product. I.e. if you sell DVDs do not affiliate with amazon.co.uk, but alongside films for sale you could sell posters from somewhere like movie market . See our guide to affiliate marketing.

Possibly the easiest way to sell online is to use eBay, the site structure and promotion is all there for you to start selling.

If you do create your own site with your own products it would be worth selling a few products on eBay providing a few details of your site in the description. You will also start to make contacts and build up a customer base.
Try selling some of your old DVDs, CDs, or Books through eBay remember one mans rubbish is another mans treasure.
Tip: You could try buying from car boot sales to sell on eBay, also with the wholesale section on ebay it can be profitable to buy from ebay to resell at car boot sales or even back onto eBay!

Like Cafepress and eQuisto Dropshipping is a way of obtaing a product to sell without holding stock. Often sellers sell goods on eBay. There are ebooks and resources on eBay with names of companies that let you Dropship.
